About
Vania Gunarti gives form to what words cannot express.
Her work begins with feelings that are difficult to name. She works across painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, and artist books, using bodies, memories, ordinary objects, handwritten words, and strange little creatures to give those feelings a physical form.
She is drawn to things that are imperfect, awkward, unfinished, or difficult to explain. A body can be fragmented. An object can become something else. Something uncomfortable can also be tender. Something beautiful can carry a quiet sadness.
Through handmade processes, repetition, fragmentation, and traces of touch, Vania allows these contradictions to remain unresolved. Her work is deeply personal, but does not ask to be completely understood. At its centre is a sense of longing—for closeness, memory, belonging, for things that disappear, and for things that have not yet arrived.
She does not make work to resolve these feelings.
She gives them somewhere to exist.
